Poor air flow in home? Here are 21 reasons!
The distance
Number 1 is the distance from a vent to the furnace The more distance between a heating vent and your furnace, the longer air has to travel to reach it’s destination Majority of home owners seem to under estimate the distance between the blower motor in the furnace and the vent in question They also fail to realize that a 90 degree elbow could add an additional 3 to 5 feet worth of distance For instance if your furnace is in the basement The air might have to travel upwards of 80 feet to reach it's destination to the heating vent on the top floor.
The room in question is above the garage!
The room above the garage always feels colder specially if there is only 1 heating vent installed. This is due to poor insulation.
The air duct system is filled with dust and debris
Your duct system might be filled with garbage which would greatly restrict the air flow. You will need air duct cleaning to rid the entire air duct system from dust and debris.
Undersized duct work!
An undersized duct system simply won’t have the capability to deliver the maximum amount of air throughout your home.
Disconnected heating pipes
The screws holding a heating pipe will eventually rust and this will cause the heating vents to disconnect.
Unfunctional booster fan
The previous occupants had installed a booster fan to aid with the air flow and the booster fan has stopped functioning.
Kinked heating pipe
A heating pipe got kinked therefor it is restricting the air flow.
A damper is blocking the air flow
A damper has been shifted or closed and it is blocking the air flow.
Furnace Filter;1
The furnace filter is clogged.
Furnace filter;2
High MERV rating on the filter is restricting the air flow.
Leaky duct work
Leaky duct work will cause significant air flow to escape your HVAC system.
Clogged AC coil
The AC coil is filled with dust and debris causing major air flow blockage.
The end boot
The end boot has become disconnected so the air is leaking out underneath flooring.
Frozen AC coil
Frozen AC coil will restrict the air flow up to 90%.
Stuffed blower wheel
Stuffed blower wheel won’t be able to spin as fast to create air.
Inaccurate setting on the dip switch
The dip switch inside the furnace was never set properly to the correct blower speed.
Furniture
Furniture is blocking your heating vent.
Cold air return
Grille may be too small.
Not enough Cold air returns
You may not have enough return grilles throughout your home.
The heating vent is closed
The plastic flap underneath the heating vent has been closed by accident.
A towel or a rag
Previous occupants had blocked the air flow by placing a towel or a rag inside the vent.
